Plan for a Christmas to Remember – Not Regret

Christmas is a wonderful time to meet, give, and celebrate — but it can also bring pressure to spend more than we can afford.

Between gifts, food, and festive outings, it’s easy to lose track of costs. Then, when the decorations come down, the reality of repayment sets in — and that “holiday hangover” can last for months.

At BSNC, we see this every year. Many people feel pressure to impress or to make everything “perfect,” but the truth is that Christmas doesn’t have to be expensive to be meaningful.

The best celebrations are about connections, not over-indulgence.

Here are a few simple ways to keep the joy — and skip the debt:

  • Make a plan and stick to it:
    • Set a budget for gifts, food, and extras. Writing it down helps you stay on track.
  • Keep it fair: Talk with family or friends about gift limits or try a Secret Santa so everyone gives and receives just one thoughtful gift.
  • Broach the idea through a family group chat e.g. “With inflation, it’s becoming more difficult to afford xyz. This year, could we consider doing a Secret Santa situation or another limit for gifts?”. You might be surprised at the response! Others are probably too embarrassed to rock the boat but feel the same as you. Start the conversation!
  • Gift family experiences such as a family photo session, family trips to the zoo with the grandkids, etc.
  • Instead of gifting each other, you and your family could pick a charity to support and donate to them.
  • Remember - gift giving was never a mandatory experience.
  • Think creatively: Homemade treats, shared meals, or a helping hand can mean more than store-bought presents.
  • Avoid “buy now, pay later” traps: They may seem convenient, but they can create extra stress come January.
  • Focus on what matters most: Time together, laughter, and kindness — these are the memories that last.

If you’d like help creating a realistic budget or planning for a debt-free new year, BSNC offers free, confidential financial mentoring across the Waimakariri and Hurunui districts.
