End of an Era
Budget Service North Canterbury Concludes 46 Years of Service, Announces Transition of Budgeting Support

Waimakariri/Hurunui, New Zealand.

With deep respect for the founders and all who have contributed over the decades, the Board of Trustees announces the closure of BSNC, marking the end of an era after 46 years of dedicated service to the community.

Established as a registered charitable trust, BSNC was founded to meet a clear local need for free, confidential financial mentoring. Over the years, it has supported individuals and whānau across the Waimakariri and Hurunui districts, working toward a vision where all New Zealanders experience financial safety, strength, and independence.

Through the commitment of its staff, mentors and volunteers, BSNC has empowered clients to build financial capability using strengths-based, client-centered approaches. Its work has included education, ongoing support, and connection to wraparound services, helping countless families improve their financial wellbeing. Central to this has been a strong commitment to upholding the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Following the 2023 funding round and the conclusion of its long-standing partnership with the Ministry of Social Development, the Board has focused on ensuring continuity of service. With the support of multiple funders, BSNC has maintained operations while planning a careful transition to protect ongoing access to financial mentoring for the community.

From 1st July 2026, The Salvation Army North Canterbury will assume responsibility for delivering budgeting and financial mentoring services across the Waimakariri and Hurunui regions. Our Financial Mentors will be employed by The Salvation Army North Canterbury and continue to offer the same level of support and confidentiality that has always been our cornerstone and commitment to the communities.

Barry Kirby, RangioraCorps Officer, says:

“The Salvation Army is committed to ensuring continued, compassionate support for individuals and whānau across North Canterbury. We’re honoured to build on BSNC’s legacy and local relationships. We believe that for North Canterbury whānau to provide the best support future MSD funding needs to be aligned with a local provider, so services remain closely connected to the community.”

This transition ensures vital services remain accessible while honouring BSNC’s legacy and decades of impact.

The Board extends its heartfelt thanks to all staff, volunteers, partners, the Waimakariri District Council, funders and supporters who have contributed to BSNC’s journey and the positive difference it has made in the lives of so many.
